How a cartoon for little 8 year old daughter has become one of the favorite programs of geeks

Several months ago I told myself that I must do a column on "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic"

I saw the phenomenon form: Gradually, many "threads" (conversation topics in forums, ed) featuring images from a current version of My Little Pony appeared on 4chan then through net. I am told that I needed a little investigating it, but I never found the time. And while I let aside, the phenomenon has grown, has grown, has grown to the point that even I understand there is now nothing.

So, it was time for me to take my courage in both hands, and I attack "My Little Pony:. Friendship is Magic" And I have to say how you have to be brave, because Know Your Meme recounts in 20 sub-memes and more than 20,000 pictures (capture below date in the month of August.)

But it was enough for me to watch the first episodes of the new version of My Little Pony to understand how adult geeks have a passion for this series.

1) It looks easily: the images are in a plump and colorful style that is reminiscent of the flash animation. The stories are well written, it is neither cutesy nor pompous. Most of the stories are based on canvas cartoon child but does so with enough humor and perspective that it's still enjoyable.

2) It's funny: The cartoon is unifying because it is close enough to the Looney Tunes cartoons where the characters have a unique personality, to take an anvil on his head smoothly and that despite the need for a moral Some episodes leave in the most complete delirium.

3) It is filled with hidden references: And that geek love it. Between research recurring background ponies (auxquel fans have even given names and personality), and references to pop culture, the game of wink with the adult viewer is incessant.

Before you talk about memes dedicated to My Little Pony, did not address the issue as it should be with all the seriousness and rigor should be devoted to him.

My Little Pony is a franchise of children's toy, and as many toys of the 80s, he had been a variation in cartoon: The Care Bears, GI Joe, Mask, Transformers ... many cartoons turned into toy. The people of my generation remember a cartoon for girls in the 80s and quite forgettable.

However, to promote the "4th generation" Ponies, rounder, Hasbro hired Lauren Faust, the creator of "Powerpuff Girls" and "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends" to oversee the new cartoon. And miraculously, the sauce is beyond the area covered by Hasbro.

Launched in October 2010, the series is about gradually her on the channel / co / (comics & cartoons) 4chan, to lead to the explosion of subjects in February. The phenomenon began to intensify on the channel / b /, tote channel and gags on the MLP (My Little Pony) began to embed in the middle of discussions about anal virginity or exchange of gory pictures . On YouTube, the episodes begin to spread like wildfire, first removed by Hasbro, then allowed when they realized that the boostait merchandising.

A picture of Boxxy case, the Little Ponies have generated a war within / b / with fans of the series are now calling them the Bronies, contraction of "Brother" (friend) and " Ponies ") and their detractors. Following this moderators decreed that any image of cartoon posted on / b / would the ban with "going to create your own website." The Little Ponies were the opportunity to leave an easy troll on the site.

Then, the case tassa, fans created "Ponychan" and the prohibition on / b / was up, displaying all day March 20 the words: "Welcome Everypony" (pun with "Everybody Welcome": " Welcome to all "becomes" Welcome to all the ponies. ")
Meanwhile, the memes of MLP have multiplied and the parody videos on the net. The happiest were the creators of the cartoon, who exchanged talks with fans in the comments. (Lauren Faust calling his regulars / co / Marades.) On May 27, the channel aired a trailer Hasbro clearly intended for geeks

Glad I could capThe series chronicles the arrival of Twilight Sparkles, a student unicorn magic that the only teacher is none other than Princess Celestia, sovereign of the kingdom of Equestria. Note that it is called "princess" and not "queen" Celestia. Considering that Twilight spends too much time looking in his books, the princess asks his favorite student to study friendship in the small town of Ponyville with his dragon Spike.

Spike is the only male character in the main cast. Often in the background of the series, he is said to be the clumsy service that puts the foot in spite of his good will. The fact that he is not a pony either not, however, prevent him from falling in love with a cast of ponies. We are in a typical character for animated girl drawings where the boys even animated the best feelings are and will be "by nature" outside the group of girls who form the "ideal" structure cartoon.

By the way, friendship is a unit that surpasses the family in this cartoon: We see very little family protagonists. While they are still young (if they were adults, it would be called "My Little Mare") the ponies all have their own houses, some work and it does not prevent some episodes of care pony more young (small little ponies?)

Arrival in Ponyville, Twilight is five friends, supposed chacunes of them have an essential virtue of friendship:

Supposed to represent the generosity, it is a purple unicorn hair, obsessed with her appearance and worked as a seamstress and dressmaker. It alone is a snapshot of the modern woman obsessed with her style, living work of sewing, fashion-victim, and living with a big cat pedantic. The fact that Spike is in love strengthens its side "diva". Geeks remember most of it in an episode where she makes a crazy group of attackers force whining.ture an audience geek with a self-purchasing power, the creators multiplied the winks in season 2, is now more reluctant to introduce memes or cinematic references totally incomprehensible for a girl of 8 years.

Analysis of the series:

The series is clearly structured as a classic series for children: After two episodes intro we learn the identity and personality of the protagonist, the season is only a result of independent episodes with a moral at the end. As the title suggests, the series revolves around friendship, presented here as a force "magic."
